Route Details

This route forms a figure of eight around the historic Ballyshannon – Irelands Oldest Town.

Starting from the Market Yard car park, take a right turn and walk up the town along Main Street. After a short distance, turn left off the main street into the Mall. Walk along the Mall Quay on the Erne Estuary. From here, continue on until the road joins the main Rossnowlagh Road, then taking the Abbey Lane which is the next road on your left.
Follow the road on over to the Abbey Mill Bridge and past the Abbey Mills until rejoining the main road back into the town along Bishop Street. At the end of Bishop Street, turn left onto Main Street and finishing up back in the Market Yard car park.

  • Inis Saimer Island – Beautiful island in the Erne Estuary
  • William Allingham’s Birthplace – Birthplace of renowned poet which is located on the Mall
  • Abbey Mills – Once a prosperous corn and flax mills
  • Catsby Cave – Mass place from during the Penal Times
  • St. Anne’s Church – Dominating the skyline on Ballyshannon, it is a fantastic viewing point. William Allingham’s burial site is located in this graveyard.
